“Inspired by artists such as Cotman, Paul Nash and Eric Ravilious, landscape is my preferred source of imagery, particularly where there is evidence of human activity. Communication and transport routes such as paths, roads and canals, sites of industrial archaeology, and buildings such as churches or farms provide inspiration.  I enjoy drawing the strong shapes of such man-made structures, which often seem so embedded in their surroundings as to be natural features of the landscape. I choose them to act as a formal compositional device, but they also speak of history and community.  In a desire to make more tangible the connection between the features I observe and the process of making a print, some works tend towards abstraction.  I hope my images are as much about how I experience the landscape as they are representations of actual places.  Lithography is my most frequent means of expression.  With the stone itself deriving from the landscape, I feel lithography has a real affinity with my subject.”

Simon Burder graduated from Exeter College of Art and was awarded a French Government Scholarship to study lithography at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.  In 1995 he established his own lithography studio at Oaks Park near Sutton, Surrey, where he continues to work primarily with stone and to encourage other artists to discover for themselves the magical properties of grease and water.  His lithographs have been selected for exhibitions including the Bradford Print Biennale, the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, the National Print Exhibition, where he was awarded the Birgit Skiold Prize in 2002, the Morandi Museum, Bologna, Italy, ‘Originals’ at the Mall Galleries, London, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Stone Plate Grease Water at the Museum of Modern Art for Wales, Small Print Big Impression, Leicester, Impress 09 National Printmaking Festival Stroud, Sidney Cooper Gallery, Canterbury and most recently the Lessedra World Art Print Annual Exhibition, Sofia, Bulgaria.
