LIMEKILNS
Limekilns is a book art collaboration between Michael Symmons Roberts and Simon Burder. It was conceived during a working holiday at the Hookses, a coastal cottage in Pembrokeshire. It consists of a six-verse poem and a set of seven original prints, which together are a response to the shared encounter with the disused limekilns at Porth Clais near St David's.
Limekilns is designed by Simon Burder and published in a limited edition of 28 copies. The original lithographs are hand printed from stones by the artist at Oaks Editions. The text is hand set in Baskerville and hand printed letterpress by John Hearn at the Redundant Press. The book is printed on Velin Arches paper and sewn in three sections without boards. It has a loose dust jacket of grey Canson Mi-Teintes paper. It is presented in a black flapcase with the title blind tooled on the front. The book measures 275 mm x 255 mm when closed.
Michael Symmons Roberts was born in Preston, Lancashire, in 1963. He has published four books of poetry, Soft Keys (1993), Raising Sparks (1999), Burning Babylon, which was shortlisted for the 2001 T.S. Eliot Prize, and Corpus, which won the 2004 Whitbread Prize. He is a frequent collaborator with the composer James MacMillan and is also an award-winning radio writer and documentary film-maker.
