"A couple of visits to Italy have resulted in prints which interpret the cities of Sienna and Venice in terms of the relationship between the spaces and the buildings, enhanced by the play of light and shade. My interest in the effect of strong shadows cast at different times of day has lead to a slight abstraction of shapes and, in the case of the Venice prints, perhaps the printing in black evokes a mood that hints at shadier aspects of the city's history."
